BEHIND CLOSED DOORS (2018)
For baroque flute and live electronics.
Written for Jonty Coy (NL). Premiered on the 16th November, 2018, at the Callaway Auditorium, The University of Western Australia.
Full duration: 5 minutes 30 seconds.
Behind Closed Doors is written for a performer versed in the practices of the Baroque performance tradition, particularly with relation to the Baroque flute. As such, the notation makes use of some historical conventions, including mensural notation and chant melody. The work draws on the sound world of the French Baroque, and includes recorded samples of harpsichord.
Thematically, this work explores secrecy, the politics of respectability, and spectres of the past. The live flute performance contrasts with electronic mediations of history – a hauntological exploration of cultural ghosts.
